Renewable energy for a new residential and commercial district

A District Heating Network to Sustainably Power Nivelles’ Infrastructure.

Project Objectives

This network will recover waste heat from geothermal boreholes to supply heat to a Thermal Energy Network located in the North of the city of Nivelles. The network will meet the thermal energy needs of a new residential and commercial district, comprising 216 housing units spread across 21 buildings, 6 local shops, 4 buildings intended for offices, and a new hospital belonging to the city of Nivelles.

Harnessing Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that relies on harnessing the heat naturally present in the subsoil.

Within heat networks, geothermal energy allows for capturing this heat via shallow or deep boreholes, and then distributing it through a hydraulic network. This technology offers the advantage of being locally available, stable year-round, and a low emitter of greenhouse gases. By leveraging this sustainable resource, it is possible to significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels, while ensuring a continuous and controlled energy supply.

The integration of geothermal energy into heating networks is therefore an important strategy for the energy transition and the reduction of the carbon footprint.
